The value of an independent eyewitness cannot be overstated.
If you are in an accident, get identifying information on any witnesses – name, phone number, address. See if they will wait for the police and if so, have the police take their information and their statement.
A non-party to an accident is not considered to have any interest in the outcome of the claim and therefore their version of events is highly regarded, not only by insurance companies but by juries. I have found that many people are willing to help and their involvement in any case may be as simple as writing a statement.
It never hurts to ask.
